How Do I Have A Suntan When There's No Sun?
I love the sun. I love the feeling of it on my skin. Most of all, I love to tan. Having a suntan makes me feel confident, attractive and most importantly - happy. When I am not travelling, (which is now, Covid-19 has taken over!) I refuse to use sunbeds as they are so bad for you, so I fake it instead!
In this post I am going to share with you my fake tan tips from start to finish - no one likes a fake tan gone wrong! I have been practising how to get the best looking tan for years now and think I've finally perfected it. So, if you follow this tutorial, you should have a natural-looking, streak-free tan even when you can't get the real thing.
Step 1: Shave & Exfoliate
This is probably the most important step in the whole routine. Either in the shower or bath, make sure you shave where you are going to tan (that's if shaving is your thing, if it isn't you can leave this step). I shave everywhere with a new blade to make sure I'm as smooth as a baby's bum.
Exfoliation is the next most important aspect to achieving an even tan. If you remove all dead skin cells, bumps and smooth your skin with a good exfoliator, then your body will absorb the tan later on more evenly. Dry skin can make tan patchy, so the less dry patches you have the better your final tan will appear.
*TIP - some exfoliators contain synthetic beads which is not great for the environment, nor your drains. Where possible, opt for a natural exfoliator such as sugar scrubs or coffee scrubs.
Step 2: Moisturise
Once you are out of the shower or bath, dry yourself well with a clean towel. Only when you are completely dry - moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! Apply a good body lotion to your entire body, including your dryer areas such as your armpits, elbows, knees and ankles plus any other problem areas that you know about on your body. Also apply a thin layer to your hairline. I am currently using Red Lane Spa's body lotion which I love! It's a nice consistency and rubs in really evenly - plus it smells lush!
Step 3: Dry Off
This step may seem obvious, but it is really important to get an even application. Make sure your moisturiser is completely dry before continuing to the next step.
Step 4: Apply Tan & Moisturise
This section contains recommendations for a tan brand that kindly gifted me their items for review. My loyal readers will know that I will not recommend products to you that I wouldn't otherwise purchase myself, so you can be rest assured that I absolutely love this product.
Before I apply my tan, I usually moisturise my tanning mitt. Let me explain - because I know this sounds weird - hear me out. So, if you use a tanning mitt to apply your tanning lotion or mousse, you'll know that usually they are a little rough on your skin and can stain like anything. I usually smother my mitt in moisturiser which tends to help with a smooth application of the tan. However, when Kiarina Beauty contacted me to try out their tanning range including their mitt, little did I know my tanning game was about to change, drastically...
Kiarina Beauty is a luxury beauty brand selling all sorts of skin care items. I was lucky enough to be gifted their Cappuccino Medium Tanning mousse with a mitt to review and, OH! I have never come across such a gorgeous tanning mitt. Firstly, it's black. Absolute GAME CHANGER. No more dirty tanning stains! Secondly, it is made from a super plush velvet fabric and is fully lined inside, which means no more tanned palms! The softness of the mitt makes so much difference to my tanning application too - bye bye fake tan fails!
Kiarina's Cappuccino tanning mousse is also very high up my list of tans that I have used. I love that it is vegan friendly and contains no nasty additives like a lot of other brands I have used in the past. The biggest bonus for me though, aside from the seamless application and the fact it contains instant bronzer for a guide, is the smell. It smells LUSH. Users of false tanning products will know exactly what I mean when I say that most tans have a dirty, fusty smell. Bork. No-one wants to sleep next to you when you smell like that, but Kiarina tan solves all our smelly tan problems with a gorgeous fruity scent. Yum!
Apply your tan evenly all over and then use a light weight moisturiser over the top to blend if you feel you may have missed some areas.
*TIP: make sure you are completely dry before putting on loose fitting clothes.
Step 5: Develop Your Tan
Once you are happy with your application, all you need to do now is wait! Most tanning brands have an average of 6-8 hours developing time, however, Kiarina tan develops in as little as 2 hours for a light coverage and up to 4 hours for a deeper tan. If I'm 100% honest though, I leave mine overnight and shower it off the next day. Most tans will stop developing completely after 8 hours so don't worry - you'll not be looking like a satsuma.
Step 6: Shower & Moisturise
Lastly, have a lovely hot shower, rinse off your tan guide and step out like a bronzed goddess. Try not to scrub yourself in the shower and be gentle when you wash. Same when drying yourself; dab-drying is best. Once you are dry - moisturise once again and keep on moisturising twice daily to get the best of your tan.
Using Kiarina tanning mousse, my glow lasted a full 7 days without any need to top up - absolutely fabulous! I would whole heartedly recommend Kiarina Beauty especially their tanning mousse and it is a brand that I would feel comfortable buying from in the future. I have linked their amazon shop here if you would like to browse any of their range!
