Flying With: Emirates Airlines
I have always wanted to fly with Emirates Airlines but I have never had a chance to do so. I have heard from many people that they are really good and that they have amazing customer service. So when the opportunity came up for me to visit my friend in Dubai, I knew I had to take it! Their tickets tend to run on the expensive side, but I was able to find an incredible deal for a round trip, both being direct flights. The flight there was 13hrs and on the way back was 14hrs.
Emirates Airlines is based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and is the largest airline in the Middle East. It operates in over 80 countries all over the world. They have a frequent flyer program called Emirates Skywards which has four levels - blue, silver, gold and platinum. An interesting fact about the Emirates Airlines is that their fleet has only two types of planes Airbus A380 and Boeing 777. They operate over 3,700 flights a week and have never had a fatal accident. Also, Emirates Airlines is rated in the top 5 of the best airlines in the world year after year.
My Personal Journey with Emirates
I do have to say that I really enjoyed flying with Emirates. Like I said above I have heard only good things about them, but the whole experience exceeded my expectations. The flight from beginning to end was pleasant, and I felt well looked after the whole time. I was lucky because on the way to Dubai, there was nobody beside me which was excellent because I could stretch my legs and not have to ask people to get up in order to go to the washroom.
Speaking of washrooms, the ones on board were well maintained and sparkling clean. Usually, I try not to use the plane washrooms unless I really have to [because they're often dirty and I’m claustrophobic] but these were an exception. Not having to worry about this particular aspect of the flight made everything a lot less stressful.
Another thing that made the long flight much more bearable was entertainment. They had so many good movies (new, classics, movies in different languages etc.) that I didn’t know which one to choose first! Watching them made the time go by so much faster that it didn’t even feel like a 13 hour flight. On the way to Dubai, I couldn’t sleep so I watched four different movies. On the way back I was very tired and pretty much slept the entire time.
The last and potentially most important point is the food. They had an abundance of delicious foods and drinks, so you will definitely not go hungry if you take this airline!
Booking and Going Through Check-in
Booking the flights was extremely easy and the times worked out perfectly for me. I was super excited to be able to get a direct flight with Emirates because I really don’t like connecting. On their website, there are a lot of options for tickets – economy, business, first-class, Emirates Skywards members etc. They open the check-in online 48 hours before the flight, which I found useful since most airlines allow you to check-in only 24 hours in advance. Once you check-in online you can actually select your seat [you see a map of the plane so you know exactly where you are sitting]. I selected my seat [beside the window] and I was able to print my boarding pass at home. The whole process was very convenient.
Once I got to the airport, I had to only drop off my backpack at the Emirates counter. There was no line-up and the staff was very friendly.
I was allowed two checked-in suitcases for free. My ticket was economy class. Most airlines you need to pay even for one luggage, and they allowed two free of charge. That was really impressive, even though I only needed one!
Getting Ready To Board
One of the coolest things was that the plane was a double-decker [Airbus A380]. What that means is that there were two levels of passengers. I was super excited to sit on the top level, however, it was reserved only for business and first class passengers. Either way, it was still pretty cool.
The boarding started on time. I think we even started boarding early. Likely due to the fact that there were a lot of employees helping the passengers get on the plane quickly. From my experience with other airlines, we always end up boarding late. The reason for that is there is always some sort of delay or mechanical issue with the plane.
So in general, the boarding process was speedy and very well organized. I was impressed.
Up In The Air
Up in the air, they provide you with a pillow, a cozy blanket and a really nice headset. As mentioned before you get a lot of food, snacks and drinks throughout the flight. I was literally stuffed the whole time. They even gave you a menu at the beginning of the flight so that you know what to expect and when. However, please note that alcohol is not being served on board. We also got a little pouch with a night mask, earplugs, toothbrush/toothpaste and socks. However, I don’t think every passenger is going to receive those pouches. It seemed they were sponsored by the highly anticipated Expo 2020 which will take place in Dubai. So I am not sure whether you will receive one [depends on when you plan to go] but I definitely enjoyed mine.
Another cool thing was that the ceiling of the plane looked like it was sparkling and it reminded me of the night sky. The seats were comfortable with lots of leg room, and the flight attendants were attentive. The entertainment system included movies, TV shows, games, radio, podcasts, a variety of music and CDs. I was very impressed at how much was available. The screen was quite big and the headset was very nice. There are also cameras on the outside of the plane so you can watch the take-off, landing and flight.
Another feature is the real-time map where you can see the flight's progress across the globe and what country we are flying over. I loved the cameras and the map, I was constantly monitoring them. You also get free Wi-Fi on board. It lasts 20mb or two hours; whichever comes first. It would last a long time if you are just doing messaging, but if you want to watch something like YouTube it won’t last as long. The free Wi-Fi really came in handy for me because I was able to message my friend that we were arriving early.
Landing and Disembarking
The landing was smooth and safe. We actually arrived in Dubai half an hour earlier than expected. I was able to retrieve my backpack pretty fast from the conveyor belt and nothing was damaged inside. Security was also a breeze since I wasn’t asked much. I left the airport in record time.
Would I Recommend Flying With Emirates?
I would highly recommend flying with the Emirates. From beginning to end, the experience was seamless. Their customer service is outstanding, the entertainment system was the best that I have ever seen, the plane was spacious and clean, and the food was plentiful and very tasty. Overall a fabulous flight! I am hoping to have a chance to fly with them again sometime soon and would definitely choose them over other airlines.
