Flying With: Qatar Airways
Welcome back to post number 3 in my Flying With: series.
Qatar Airways, based in Doha Qatar, have been voted in the Top 10 of the World's Best Airline, and have also claimed the award for the World's best Business Class and First Class! That is pretty insane - if only I could afford a business class ticket!
So how about their economy service?
In this post I will explain to you my personal experience of Flying With: Qatar Airways.
I have completed four flights with Qatar, two on a 787 Dreamliner and two on the Airbus350. Flight paths BHX > DOHA, DOHA > MLE (Maldives) and return. I flew with Qatar in October 2018 and will fly again with them exactly one year later in October 2019.
**DISCLAIMER** All opinions in this post are my own and I am in no way affiliated with Qatar Airways.
Check-In: Before Arrival at The Airport.
Like most other airlines these days, Qatar operate an online check-in service, available 48hours before your departure time. You log in to their website and give all your passport details, same as usual, and then you're checked in online.
On most airlines there is an option to select your seat on check-in, and there was this available, but we could select any upgraded seats for some reason. We always upgrade to extra leg room on flights, but this was not available to do for some reason. I have no idea why. Also, we never recieved a boarding pass once check-in was completed online. We did recieve an email confirmation but no physical boarding pass, which I have also never experienced before. Maybe this is something to do with flying long-haul? Who knows!
Boarding the flight
There is a reason why Qatar Airlines have won so many awards.
Upon boarding we were greated by a very smartly dressed and smiley flight attendant who showed us to our seats. We explained to her about the extra leg room situation (FYI the lady at the check-in desk at the airport would not help us with this for some unknown reason) and she said that the flight was only half full, so she would try her best to move us once boarding was complete.
And she did.
Infact, we were moved into extra leg room for 3/4 of our flights, which made all the difference to my 6ft10 husband.
Other than this, the seats themselves are a little wider with a little more leg room than what you would find on other more local flights, but for which you would expect too for long-haul airlines. We were given a warm towel to wipe our faces with and the flight attendant came back to check our seats were OK too. The little extra attentative service makes you feel like you're not slumming it on a budget airline and makes you appreciate the 'you get what you pay for' saying.
What to Expect Onboard a Qatar Flight
Firstly, the obvious thing for me was the decor of the plane. This sounds really trivial, but for someone with high flight anxiety, the small details make the difference to me. The plane is clean and tidy, you wont find any of the inside of the seat hanging out through the cover on these planes. The seats are all laid out with a pillow and blanket too, ready for you to get comfy during your long flight. The toilets are really clean and spacey too, your knees don't hit the door when you sit down on Qatar! :-)
The entertainment system onboard is brilliant. It is free to use and includes many of the latest blockbuster films, TV Box Sets, Music and games. There are also USB outlets to use and free WiFi (although I couldn't get mine to work).
For those of you who may not have the experience of flying long haul, I think I should make a note here that Qatar operates an 'all-inclusive' service onboard for food and drink. The food is of a pretty high standard considering it's airplane food, and you can have as many tea, coffee, juice, soda, spirits, wines and beers as you would like. We didn't realise this and got laughed at when we presented our cash to the flight attendant to pay for a drink!
The flight attendants are really attentive and busy throughout. I noticed too that when the lights where turned off during the flight, the attendants were still wandering up and down the isles checking on things, which put my mind to rest.
Landing and Disembarking
Out of the 4 flights we did with Qatar, all of the landings were very smooth, almost textbook. Disembarking is quick without feeling rushed. The only thing I would say is on all 4 flights, Economy disembark via business class and although it was good to have a little nosey at the differences (huge!) it was a little disheartening. Ha-ha.
Our luggage arrived in all destinations undamaged, not even a scratch, and quickly too so there was hardly any waiting around once we had landed into the Maldives.
Would I recommend Flying With: Qatar?
Absolutely 100% Yes.
If you like to travel in style, even in economy, then Qatar are the airline for you. The service was brilliant, staff were lovely, and the food was good. The flights were comfortable (as far as an economy seat goes) and the entertainment onboard was plenty enough to keeo you occupied on a 8 hour flight.
