How To Spend 24 Hours In Salzburg
Salzburg is a wonderful city. It's safe, pretty and full of history and exciting things to do. I visited Salzburg in September, and here is my recommended things to do when you only have 24 hours in Salzburg.

We arrived into Salzburg Airport early in the morning, around 9:30am. Getting through airport security is really easy, and very quick as far as airports go. We jumped in a taxi and headed to Holiday Inn Salzburg City, which is very conveniently located. Just a ten minute walk from Mirabell Platz, which is where most of the sight seeing begins.
Once we had freshened up and dropped our luggage off at the hotel, we headed out to start our day.
The Main Hot Spots to See in Salzburg City
In my opinion, you could aimlessly wander around Salzburg city without much of a plan and be amazed by what you stumble across. But, for the planners amongst us, here are my top recommendations of things to see that shouldn't really be missed.
Mirabell Palace & Gardens
Mirabell Palace was built in 1606 and today, serves as a ideal location for the most romantic weddings you could imagine. If wandering around Palace's isn't your thing, make sure you at least walk through the gardens. By no means am I green-fingered, but even I appreciate the beauty and serenity of these gardens. The layout of the flowers which create baroque style patterns in the lush grass is something to be marvelled at. If you exit the gardens to the right (as you look at the palace from the entrance), you can climb the famous steps from The Sound of Music film, and get a view of the gardens from above, which is even more mind-blowing than being in the gardens.
We spent around 30 minutes walking around the gardens, before we moved on to...
Love Lock Bridge
Exit the gardens from the left and follow the road past the grand hotels for 5 minutes until you come to Salzburg's Love Lock bridge. A great place for couples to leave an engraved lock in Salzburg forever, but also a fantastic place to take in the breath-taking views of the river and surrounding landscape at city-level.
One of the most gorgeous palaces in Salzburg and also part of the Official Sound Of Music tour is Schloss Leopoldskron. The palace is surrounded by a seven hectare park and is situated right on the edge of a turquoise blue lake. Take a walk around the lake and marvel and the picturesque views from every angle - this place is a photographers dream!
When Ed Sheeran wrote his song "Castle on the Hill" I am convinced he was on about this place. It is the biggest, fully preserved Castle in central Europe and gives you the most astonishing views of the whole of Salzburg city from up above. The castle houses the string puppet museum and the panoramic restaurant, where you can induldge in a Apfelstrudel (a typically German/ Austrian dessert) and take in the views in comfort. I highly recommend!
The Cable Railway to the Fortress
The cable train is an experience in itself and for those who like a bit of novelty, is the perfect (and easiest!) way to access the fortress. The train carriage is almost vertical, as in 54 seconds you are treated to some incredible views of the city before your treated to the finale at the top of the castle. It costs 21 Euro per ticket, which is kinda pricey, but to save your legs (which may already by tired by now if you follow this itinerary!) it is definitely worth it!
One Thing To Give A Miss...
OK, so all of the sights listed above are really worth your time and money. However, one thing we did do, but was a but of a let down, was the Sound of Music museum. It was 8EUR entry, and to be honest, it was just not what we were expecting. It was 3 rooms with some facts written on the wall and some photos and that was.... pretty much it. We were in and out in about 10 minutes and didn't live up to expectations. Unless your a die -hard Sound of Music fan, i'd definitely give this a swerve.
